Guinea-Bissau adopted their national flag in 1973 upon achieving independence from Portugal. The flag sports pan-African colours. The black star is universally understood to symbolize unity in Africa. The red represents the blood spilled in the nations struggles, green for the forests and gold for mineral wealth.
